Sources & further reading

Every road needs a good map

Each date and story on The Caravan will point back to where it came from: a book and its page, or a lecture and its minute. The shelves are being filled.

How we choose

Four rules for the road

History is told many ways. These are the rules every era page follows before a single date goes up.

  • Classical histories first The early chroniclers and biographers, read through scholars who know them well.
  • Checked against modern scholarship Dates and places are compared with trusted modern histories and atlases.
  • “c.” when a date is approximate Where historians differ, we say so. Hijri years appear only from the Hijrah, 622 CE.
  • Lectures with a timestamp When a story comes from a talk, we name the speaker and the minute it is told.
